This mixed media piece, “Apis” is 18″ x 18″ and mostly alcohol inks on Yupo. I also used a bit of my go-to Sakura Permapaque marker and an oil-based Sharpie.
A bit of history: back in November of 2012, I participated in my first-ever, public art event – Art Conspiracy 8. I’ve done a lot of art shows and events since then, but Art Con 8 is where it all started for me. If I had never learned about and participated in Art Con, I don’t know if I would’ve: 1) had the guts to put myself out there, 2) had so much fun, and 3) most importantly, met so many awesome people whom are now my friends and colleagues.
About Art Conspiracy
Art Conspiracy is a Dallas nonprofit community that conspires to bring artists and musicians together, raise funds, and activate awareness for regional creative programs and causes. Each year, their signature event (I’ve now participated in three of them) is held in the fall:
ARTISTS CREATE ART WORKS ON SITE
Art Conspiracy is street-level philanthropy with equal parts community art event and fundraiser. More than 120 artists converge on a warehouse-turned-art studio to create unique works of art on Art Con’s signature 18 x 18 inch plywood boards.
STARTING BID $20
These original creations are sold in fast-pasted, high-energy auctions while local bands play on the Art Con stage.
PROCEEDS GO TO BENEFICIARY
Art Conspiracy chooses a new beneficiary each year to receive the proceeds of the major event, which is held in November and attracts an average of 2,000 attendees.
In addition to the HUGE signature event, Art Conspiracy also has an annual “seed” event in the summer, to raise funds for operating costs of the larger fall event.
Recently, Art Conspiracy has expanded its programming by adding concerts, exhibits, performances and more initiatives, to reach to a wider audience and further the success of its vision: “to be an altruistic friend, resource, and platform for the regional creative community.”
Artist Bags Project
I am honored to have been invited to participate in one of Art Conspiracy’s new projects in which original art will be printed on bags by the ever-so-awesome Cycochik, which has grown to be an internationally-awarded compassionate brand recognized for their creative, cruelty-free, eco-friendly, and custom-made vegan handbags. (Side note: be sure to check out the FABULOUS Cykochick artist collection bags with designs from local artist friends Jody Pham and Patricia Rodriguez! <3)
Artists were asked to create something that relates the theme “compassion” and what it means to them. I believe compassion is taking care of others, especially those who may not be able to care for themselves. For me, the latter applies to animals; in this particular case, bees. The honey bee population is rapidly declining, and I think we as a society should have more concern about how the extinction of these bees would affect us all.
Art Conspiracy has posted all the designs submitted by participating artists, and voting is open now through August 10. Three (3) designs will get through to the next round, so your vote is important. The winning designs will be used by Cykochick to create bags which will be available for sale. A portion of all proceeds go to Art Conspiracy and to the artists whose designs are used.
Of course, it would be really cool if you were to vote for MY design. But I simply ask that you click, look, and vote for your favorite design. Proceeds of these bag sales will go to good causes, and whether or not my wallet is one of those is ultimately not important.
You know how people win Oscars and then say, “it was an honor just to have been nominated”? Yeah, those people are actors. They wanted to win that sucker and had a speech prepared in case they did. I won’t lie: I would be ecstatic to see my bee on a bag…but I’m not acting when I say it really is an honor just to participate! Art Conspiracy does so much for our community – I’m just happy to be a small part of it. I have no speech prepared.
