I recently treated myself to a lovely new wooden box full of 72 of my favorite watercolor pencils – Inktense by Derwent.

I’ve been using these pencils for a few years and absolutely adore them. I use them very often to add color to woodburned pieces, as well as for drawing on paper and in mixed media work. The magic really happens when you add water! 🙂

For this purple lotus (based on a photograph I took in Austin, TX), I used the pencils to create washes and also used them “wet-in-wet”. This piece is 10″ x 8″ on 140lb. cold press watercolor paper. (I think it’s Arches, but I can’t remember!)

I actually did this at the end of 2015 and have yet to create anything in the new year. MUST REMEDY THAT ASAP.

I really want to do more of this type of work, as well as experiment more with watercolor in general, in 2016.
